5 Affordable Therapy Options You Should Know About

Affordable Therapy

First of all, if you’re dealing with any kind of mental health issue, whether that be anxiety, depression, eating disorders, and everything in between, it’s important to remember that you’re not alone. It’s also important to speak up about what you’re feeling and seek help. I personally pushed this off for way too long. I hid my volatile, self-deprecating thoughts and anxieties from everyone around me, including my closest family and friends, for as long as I could.

But then came my breaking point…Even now, I remember the moment I decided it was finally time to reach out for some professional help. However, if you’ve ever looked into therapy, then you know how expensive it really is. And as an early 20-something living in LA, my finances weren’t necessarily intact.

Luckily, a friend of mine recommended an affordable therapy option that offers in-person sessions that were more closely aligned with my price range. * Side note – spending your money on therapy will be much more rewarding and satisfying than spending your money on going out to eat or buying an overpriced tee-shirt. *

I’ve been seeing my therapist for almost a year now, and I can honestly tell you that therapy has changed my life. And if you’re searching for help with your mental health, I want it to change yours too. Below, I’m sharing five affordable therapy options you should know about.

Open Patch Collective

Open Path Collective is the platform I used to find my therapist. All you need to get started is a one-time $60 membership fee. From there, you can search for therapists and counselors in your area that offer in-office or online psychotherapy sessions. Most sessions are between $30 and $60, which is significantly lower than most traditional therapy prices. Tip: I asked a few different therapists in my area for a quick consult call to learn more about them and their practice. I suggest doing this so you can find the right match for you and your needs!

When you join Talkspace, you’ll get matched with a licensed therapist who’s available for you to message via texting on the app 24-seven. You can also schedule video calls when you need to talk it out in a real-time conversation. Plans for Talkspace start at $65 per week.

NeedyMeds

If you’re someone who is either underinsured or doesn’t have insurance, NeedyMeds is a great resource. It’s a nonprofit database that helps connect people to programs that will help them afford their healthcare costs, including therapy. Just enter your zip code and you’ll be able to find clinics in your area that offer services on a sliding scale basis (based on income).

National Alliance on Mental Illness

If you’re comfortable talking in a group setting and want to find a community of people who are struggling with similar experiences, turn to the programs offered by NAMI, the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization. With affiliates in communities across the US, NAMI hosts a variety of classes and programs that offer mental health support.

BetterHelp

BetterHelp is another therapy app that connects you with a licensed therapist, psychologist, or counselor. They have a variety of plans that range from $60 to $80 per week depending on how much and what kind of counseling you’re seeking. Once you sign up and match with a mental health professional, you’ll have 24-seven access to messaging with your counselor, as well as being able to schedule live chats and video calls.

No matter what you’re dealing with, know that you can learn how to better navigate the situation and your emotions with some professional help. If you’re ever in need of someone to talk to or you have any questions about the programs I shared above, please feel free to message me via my contact email or direct message me on Instagram.
